Pi Rho Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. emerged from the “South of the James” Interest Group. With the desire to establish a presence for the sorority in Chesterfield County, twenty Alpha Kappa Alpha members held their first organizational meeting on April 2, 1986.  The South of the James Interest Group established its presence in the community through various service projects.  On March 18, 1987,  Marye Jefferies, the Mid-Atlantic Regional Director informed the South of the James Interest Group that their application to charter a chapter had been approved.  On April 4,1987 Pi Rho Omega Chapter held its chartering ceremony at the Holiday Inn Koger Center South and became the 87th chapter of the Mid-Atlantic Region.

Over the years Pi Rho Omega Chapter has been involved in numerous service projects in the Chesterfield and Metro-Richmond areas.  As a result of its efforts, the chapter has made major accomplishments by receiving several outstanding graduate chapter awards, recognition for outstanding programs, hosted the 2008 Northern Western Virginia Cluster, co-hosted several Regional Conferences and the 1990 Boule.  Pi Rho Omega Chapter is home of three Basilei who have received the Pauline Morton Alumni Basileus of the Year award.  In April of 2007, the chapter co-hosted the Centennial Celebration in Richmond, VA.

To expand its community service efforts, Pi Rho Omega Chapter established the Professionals Reaching Out to the Community (PROC) Foundation, Incorporated in 1997. This 501(c) 3 was organized for the exclusive purpose of soliciting, managing and disbursing funds to support scholarships and community service programs.  The Foundation’s major fundraiser is its Beautillion, which has been presented annually since 1995.

Since its inception, the chapter’s membership has grown from twenty charter members to over 165 members.  Pi Rho Omega is home to the Mid-Atlantic Regional Director, Dr. Linda H. Gilliam. In 2012 Pi Rho Omega Chapter celebrates its 25th Anniversary.
